girl with sparkler new years

New Year’s Resolutions… Or Not?

Are you the kind of person that makes New Year’s resolutions every year? I love the idea of resolutions – the intent to focus on changing something about ourselves in order to improve our lives. However, they just never did succeed for me. The huge goal loomed over me and eventually everyday life just caught up and overshadowed any attempt I had made, especially once kids (and, therefore, lack of sleep) came into play in my daily life. Ultimately, I may have made it a month with my new resolution, but that’s about it.

So what have I changed? What do I do now instead of New Year’s resolutions? Two things – a word of the year for my overall big picture (especially when goal-planning each month) and a daily focus on habits. Yes, habits. If you’ve been here a while, you know that I’m all about taking baby steps because I believe that small changes are less intimidating/overwhelming, and are much easier to be successful with. And you know what happens when we are successful (even if it’s only with small habits)? We find renewed motivation and are able to keep. on. going. So ultimately you find more success with your initial goal or resolution.

Want to follow along with me this year and try it for yourself? I’d love to see you crush your big goals with little habit changes right along with me! I’m going to post here a couple of times each week throughout the month of January to show you how I implement this process, to give you encouragement, and some ideas, tips, and tricks along the way. Want daily reminders? Follow me on Facebook and Instagram and let’s check in with each other.

Here’s to 2021! Let me know in the comments what goals or habits you’re working on this year. Remember, no change is too small here. Small change is better than no change!

    1. Yes! That’s a great approach! The first thing I tried after “giving up” on resolutions was a word of the year. I loved it! I’ve been choosing one for the past 4, maybe 5, years and it helps to guide the big picture for the year. What word did you pick this year?

  1. I am totally with you on the daily focus on habits! This is what I am working on. I find the whole goals thing to be anxiety provoking and a bit overrated. I’m looking forward to your progress on IG!

    1. Yesssss, you said it perfectly – anxiety provoking and a bit overrated. I agree that habits is where it’s at. What habit are you working on first this year? See you on IG!

  2. I used to always make resolutions, but never stuck to them. Now I call them goals and make them much smaller. My main focus is on my word. Last year, I picked love and I feel that was a good choice and it helped guide my actions throughout the year. This word is beginnings because I am focusing on getting my business off the ground plus some other projects I want to start.

    1. Same here with the resolutions. I love your word of the year choices!! Beginnings is perfect for 2021 – I can’t wait to see how things grow for you this year!
