How to Cook Asparagus Two Ways

These last two weeks, I’ve ordered a bunch of asparagus in my Imperfect Foods box (Get $10 -or more- off of your first order when you use my link). I know this green veggie has lots of health benefits, and while I do love eating it, I’ve usually only eaten it grilled or wrapped in bacon, and I wasn’t the one who cooked it either way. It was time for me to finally try to find a couple of ways to cook this delicious vegetable on my own, so I went to my two favorite ways of cooking any vegetable – steaming and roasting.

Steamed Asparagus (The Easiest Way)

In my opinion, nothing is easier than steaming vegetables. I have a small double boiler that I use, which makes it super easy. Fill the bottom pot about halfway with water, place your washed and prepped veggies in the top portion, cover and put on medium to high heat. Check every 5-10 minutes until vegetables are the desired softness. (I like my steamed vegetables pretty soft). So what did I do differently for asparagus? Not much…

1.) Clean your asparagus (I soak the asparagus in one capful of Thieves Fruit and Veggie wash in a bowl of water, and then rinse).

2.) Cut off the bottoms. You don’t need to cut much off (unless they look pretty bad).

3.) Place asparagus in the top pot of a double boiler and steam until soft. (You may have to cut the asparagus into smaller pieces if they don’t fit in the double boiler).
*Here’s the step you don’t want to skip:
4.) Add 1 TBSP of butter on top of the asparagus and allow it to melt. (You can do this in the double boiler during the last few minutes of cooking, or on the plate immediately after removing the asparagus from the pot).

I do love a delicious hollandaise sauce over my steamed asparagus, but I’ve made it once before (before I had kids), and it was quite time consuming, so I’m sticking with butter for now while I still have little ones around my feet in the kitchen. Maybe when they get older, I’ll switch from simple butter to a more complicated, but delectable sauce.

Roasted Garlic Asparagus (Step it Up a Notch)

1.) Clean your asparagus (I soak the asparagus in one capful of Thieves Fruit and Veggie wash in a bowl of water, and then rinse).
2.) Cut off the bottoms. You don’t need to cut much off (unless they look pretty bad).
3.) Place asparagus on a parchment paper lined pan.
4.) Sprinkle with olive oil and garlic powder.
5.) Cook on 375 degrees for about 15 minutes. (Times may differ depending on your oven and the size of your asparagus, so check them about every 5 minutes or so). I flipped them about halfway through cooking.

Enjoy! I served our asparagus with steak my husband had grilled on the pit, and a piece of warm french bread. It was a delicious pairing! What’s your favorite way to eat asparagus?
