Looking for another great gift for the children in your life? This is one that you can turn into a fun Christmas activity too! I made the dough on the stove, but I let my kiddos do the step where you blend the dye into the dough. They loved it! The best part? The essential oils added to the playdough can turn this activity into a calming one! This recipe can make up to 6 balls of calming homemade playdough (we made 4 large ones this time).

Ingredients

2 cups of flour
3/4 cup of salt
4 tsp of cream of tarter
2 cups of slightly warm water
2 Tbsp organic coconut oil
Young Living Essential Oils (Lavender, Peace & Calming, Valor, Stress Away, etc.)
Food Coloring (optional)
4 – 6 Quart sized bags (if doing various colors)
Wax Paper
Storage Containers (ziploc bags or mason jars)

Directions

1) Measure out all ingredients first.  Combine flour, salt, and cream of tarter in a pot on the stove over medium heat.  Stir continuously.

2) Add in warm water and coconut oil.  Continue to stir until the dough thickens and begins to form a ball.  Remove from heat.  Place on wax paper to cool.

3) Once cooled, knead and then separate into 4 – 6 balls (if adding different colors).

4) Add 2 – 3 drops of essential oils to each ball and knead again to disperse oils.  Place in a quart bag.  Form a small divet in the dough and add 4 – 6 drops of food coloring.  Close dough around the food coloring, close the bag and knead to disperse the color throughout the playdough without getting it on your hands.

5) Remove the playdough from the bag and continue kneading with hands until the color is uniform.

6) Store in an air-tight container, like a quart ziploc bag or a small mason jar. (Consider labeling the color & essential oil – maybe even with a suggestion of what the oil is helpful with.  Example: Purple, Lavender – Calming.)

Want to Take This to the Next Level?

Gift the playdough with a few cookie cutters, rollers, etc. to encourage even more fun! -Or- Make this gift into an experience by helping the kids you are gifting it to make the playdough themselves.

Not Really a DIY Person?

Help your child stay calm and relaxed by diffusing lavender in the diffuser while playing with any store-bought playdough. My favorite kid diffuser is the owl diffuser because it’s an all-in-one humidifier, night-light, and white-noise machine! (limited edition Snowy the owl diffuser comes with two kidscents oils – item number 39471 OR Feather the owl diffuser – item number 27007). You can order yours here.
