The Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils

  • After finding out that I was pregnant for our first child, I began to care more about what things I was ingesting – from food I was eating to what medicine I was taking. As I researched, Young Living Essential Oils kept coming up as a great, healthy addition to the things I was changing in my life. However, lack of knowledge, the fact that no one I knew in real life was using them, and the price tag all kept me from actually ordering the oils at that time. Instead, I added it to a mental list of things I’d like to change to in the future.
  • Fast forward 4 years later, when our second child was one year old, my husband gifted me the Premium Starter Kit for Mother’s Day and our lives have changed so much (for the better) since then! I’ve replaced all of our synthetic, endocrine-disrupter-laden cleaning and beauty products with all natural, healthy alternatives. I’ve replaced the items in our medicine cabinet with natural, pure essential oils and supplements. I’ve learned so many tips and tricks for using these products, as well as how to get the best bang for your buck, and I can’t wait to share them with you! We’ve made these changes slowly over the past few years, and we can definitely see an improvement in our health because of it!

What are Essential Oils?

  • Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts obtained by careful steam distillation, cold pressing, or resin tapping. These pure essential oils are far more powerful than the botanicals from which they are extracted, so a little goes a long way.
  • Not all essential oils are made the same. Be careful with oils sold in stores that claim to be pure. Turn the bottle over and read the label. The only ingredient should be the plant extract – no other additives or synthetics. If the bottle says keep away from skin, that’s a big red flag.

Tips for Successfully Using Essential Oils

  • Basic Safety with Essential Oils – Never put oils in your eyes or ears. Dilute oils by mixing with a carrier oil (like coconut oil, grapeseed oil, almond oil, olive oil, etc.) before applying to your skin.
  • A little goes a long way with essential oils since they are so concentrated. Always start with a small amount and increase only if needed. When using oils, sometimes you may need to apply or diffuse often, rather than just one time.

Common Questions/FAQ About Essential Oils

  • How do I order my own essential oils?
    • You can use my link here to get started. The Premium Starter Kit has our most popular oils as well as a diffuser of your choice. It’s the way most people get started.
  • How do I use essential oils?
    • There are three ways to use essential oils – aromatically, topically, and internally. Aromatically means to smell them (sniff straight from the bottle) or diffuse them. Topically means to apply them to your skin (I suggest diluting with a carrier oil first). Internally means to take them in a capsule or add them to food or drink. I recommend only using Young Living Vitality Oils for internal use.
  • Where should I apply essential oils?
    • I dilute my oils and then apply to either the bottoms of my feet or the back of my neck. I sometimes apply oils to my wrists also. There are so many other places that may differ depending on the oil and what you are using it for.
